Thunder April Player of the Month

Congratulations to Sasha Lutz on being named the Thunder Player of the Month for April.  Her play was outstanding throughout the entire month which enabled the team to capture the AMMFHL and Pacific Cup championships as well claiming the Bronze at the Esso Cup.  She was a leader offensively and defensively including strong leadership to the team.

Congratulations to Jessica Healey for being named the Global Edmonton Athlete of the Week.  Her outstanding perfomance last week with the Thunder in BC during the Pacific Cup earned her this great honor.

Thunder wins Pacific Championship!!!!

The Thunder claimed the Pacific Cup Championship this past weekend in Surrey, BC as they swept the Fraser Valley Phantoms in two games of their best of three series.

Game one on Friday night was a great atmosphere as the arena was jam packed by both the Thunder families that made the trek to Surrey and the home crowd Phantom fans.  The Thunder won a tight game 3-2 which was a very physical affair including a come from behind win by the team.  Game two was another solid crowd and the Thunder controlled the play for most part and earned a 3-1 win. 

The Thunder has earned their way to the Esso Cup National Championships that will be held in Charlottetown, PEI on April 22-28.   The Thunder will represent Alberta and British Columbia as Team Pacific.

Alumni Earns Honor

Congratulations to Thunder alumni Stephanie Zvonkovic on her selection as the “Freshman of the Year” for the Calgary Dinos Women’s Hockey Team.

This past season Stephanie patrolled the blue line for the Dinos where she scored two goals and four assists in regular season play as well as earning one assist and a plus three rating in four play-off games.  Her real contribution during the year was her solid defensive play and compete level.

Stephanie completed an outstanding first season as the Dinos won the CIS National Championship last month and now has earned this great individual honor.


Edmonton Thunder March Player of the Month

Congratulations to Alanna Tinney on being selected as the March Player of the Month.

During the month of March, Alanna contributed offensively 3 goals & 2 assists for a total of 5 points in 7 play-off games with most of her points being timely goals.  Her true contribution during this month was her solid defensive play and leadership to her line mates. 

Alanna is currently in grade 12 and attending Harry Ainlay High School where she is a very high achiever academically.  She has committed to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (CIS) for next season.

Well Done Alanna!!!!


Thunder Crowned AMMFHL & Provincial Champions

The Thunder captured the AMMFHL & Provincial Championship on Saturday afternoon in Vauxhall as they defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers in 4 games.  It was a hard fought series that pushed the Thunder to be at their best.  The final game was a 3-1 score which the Thunder controlled from start to finish.

Throughout the play offs the Thunder earned a record of 9 wins and 1 loss as they proved to be the class of the AMMFHL once again. 

The Thunder will now face the BC champion- Fraser Valley Phantoms in a best of three series scheduled for April 6-8 in Surrey, BC for the Pacific Cup with the champion earning the right to compete in the Esso Cup National Championship at the end of April in Charlottetown, PEI.

Lutz Commits To Griffins!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Sasha Lutz has committed to the University of Grant MacEwan Griffins (ACAC) for the 2012-13 season.  The Griffins are based out of Edmonton and participate in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference where they just finished up a solid season as they made it to the conference championship.

Lutz is a second year center with the Thunder and has been a solid contributor to the team during her time with the Thunder.  She is a dynamic offensive player that has led the Thunder team in scoring as well as being one of the top scorers in the AMMFHL.  Combined with her skills is a great compete level as she plays in all situations on the team. 

Lutz attends St. Francis Xavier High School (Hockey Academy alumni) where she is a solid student.  As well she will be pursuing a Science Degree with the goal of achieving a career in the medical field.

Lutz joins Rachel Johnson (Saskatchewan), Jessica Sekulic (Alberta), Alanna Tinney (British Columbia), Kelsie Lang (Calgary) and Brooke Peden (Lindenwood) as the sixth graduating Thunder player to earn a scholarship for the 2012-13 season.

Congratulations to Sasha and her family on this outstanding accomplishment and the Thunder wish her success throughout her university career.


Thunder Win North Division Championship

This past weekend the Thunder won the north division with a convincing three game sweep over the St. Albert Slash. 

The Slash were beaten convincingly throughout the series as the Thunder controlled the play in all three games and continued their dominance over the Slash program with this being the third consecutive year that the two teams have met in the north division championship with the Thunder prevailing once again.

Next up is the south division champion Medicine Hat Tigers with the winner being crowned AMMFHL champions.

Thunder Alumni Wins National Championship

The Thunder would like to congratulate alumni Stephanie Zvonkovic on winning the CIS National Championship this past month in Edmonton.  Stephanie is a first year member of the Calgary Dinos and helped her team to their first ever CIS championship.

Last season Stephanie was a big part of the Thunder’s season during their silver medal at the Esso Cup National Championship.

Edmonton Thunder February Player of the Month

Congratulations to Amy Boucher on being selected as the February Player of the Month.

During the month of February, Amy led the team in scoring as she scored 9 goals & 5 assists for 14 points in 7 games.  As well she played well defensively throughout the month.  She is a first year player to the team and has had a solid regular season.

Amy is currently in grade 10 and attending McNally High School where she is a very high achiever academically.  Her goal is to further her education and hockey at the post-secondary level once her midget eligibility is done.

Peden Commits To Lady Lions!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Brooke Peden has committed to the University of Lindenwood Lady Lions (NCAA Div I) for the 2012-13 season.  The Lady Lions are based out of St. Charles, Missouri and play in the NCAA’s CHA Conference.  The Lady Lions are a solid program known for their athletics and facilities within the NCAA division I schools.

Peden is a first year defenseman with the Thunder and has been a welcome addition to the team this season.  Her outstanding skating and skills have benefitted the Thunder this season as she helps anchor the defense.  She contributes in all situations for the Thunder and is a lead by example leader on the team. 

Peden attends the St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy where she is a solid student.  As well she will be pursuing a degree in athletic training.

Peden joins Rachel Johnson (Saskatchewan), Jessica Sekulic (Alberta), Alanna Tinney (British Colombia) and Kelsie Lang (Calgary) as the fifth graduating Thunder player to earn a scholarship for the 2012-13 season.

Congratulations to Brooke and her family on this outstanding accomplishment and the Thunder wish her success throughout her university career.

Lang Commits To Dinos!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Kelsie Lang has committed to the University of Calgary Dinos (CIS) for the 2012-13 season.  The Dinos are based out of Calgary and play in the CIS’s Canada West Athletics Conference.  The Dinos earned first place in their conference this season as well are coached by former Canadian Olympian Danielle Goyette.

Lang is a third year defenseman with the Thunder and has been a leader amongst the defense core, as well she was an integral contributor to the team’s championship run last year and is on pace for her best season to date.  She intimidates opponents with her skill and strength making her one of the top defenseman in the AMMFHL.  This season she was selected to the AMMFHL North All-Star Team as well was selected to the 2nd Team All-Star at the prestigious Calgary Macs Tourney.

Lang attends the St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy where she is an honor student.  As well she will be pursuing a Science degree in university.

Lang joins Rachel Johnson (Saskatchewan), Jessica Sekulic (Alberta) and Alanna Tinney (British Columbia) as the fourth graduating Thunder player to earn a scholarship for the 2012-13 season.

Thunder Clinch AMMFHL Regular Season Title!!!

In their second last game, with their win on the road against the Highwood Raiders, the Edmonton Thunder clinched first place and earning the AMMFHL Regular Season Title.  The AMMFHL title will also secure home ice throughout the play offs and a first round bye.

The Thunder earned a league leading record of 24-5-3.  The Thunder has claimed back to back titles over the past two seasons.

Thunder Clinch North Division Regular Season Title!!!

With their most recent win against the Sherwood Park Fury, the Thunder has clinched first place in the north division and earning the North Division Regular Season Title.  The north division title will also secure home ice throughout the play offs within the north division for the Thunder.

With four regular season games remaining the Thunder will attempt to clinch the AMMFHL Regular Season Title.

Edmonton Thunder January Player of the Month

Congratulations to Brooke Peden on being selected as the January Player of the Month.

During the month of January, Brooke was a solid contributor to the Thunder as the team had a record of 5-0-1 and has continued their lock on first place in the north division.  Brooke plays defense and was nothing short of outstanding during each game as she scored one goal in the seven games, but her main contribution on the ice was her solid outstanding play overall as she plays in all situations for the Thunder.   

She is currently in grade 12 and attending the St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy where she maintains solid academics.  Her goal is to attain a university scholarship to the CIS or NCAA for the 2012-13 season so she can further her education and hockey career.

Tinney Commits To Thunderbirds!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Alanna Tinney has committed to the University of British Colombia Thunderbirds (CIS) for the 2012-13 season.  The Thunderbirds are based out of Vancouver and play in the CIS’s Canada West Conference.  The Thunderbirds are an up and coming program lead by first year coach Jen Rawson.

Tinney is a first year center with the Thunder and has fit in well this season.  She is a versatile forward that can play in all situations and competes hard.  She is a well-rounded player who adds leadership and intensity to her game.

Tinney attends Harry Ainlay High School where she is an honor student with distinction.  She will be pursuing a Kinesiology degree followed by a doctor of chiropractic degree.

Tinney joins Rachel Johnson (Saskatchewan) and Jessica Sekulic (Alberta) as the third graduating Thunder player to earn a scholarship for the 2012-13 season.

Sekulic Commits To Pandas!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Jessica Sekulic has committed to the University of Alberta Pandas (CIS) for the 2012-13 season.  The Pandas are based out of Edmonton and play in the CIS’s Canada West Conference.  The Pandas have a strong history and tradition as they have won seven (7) CIS National Championships.

Sekulic is a third year forward with the Thunder and has been a big part of the Thunder’s success during her time in the AMMFHL.  She is a true “power forward” who combines skill and strength to her game.  Currently she is enjoying a breakout season with the Thunder as this season’s achievements include; being selected to Team Alberta, AMMFHL North All-Star Team and selected as the Calgary Macs Tournament’s MVP, 1st Team All-Star and Top Scorer.

Sekulic attends Archbishop O’Leary High School where she is a high achiever and she will be pursuing an arts degree followed by a law degree.

Jessica joins Rachel Johnson (Saskatchewan) as the second graduating Thunder player to earn a scholarship for the 2012-13 season.

Johnson Commits To Huskies!!!

The Edmonton Thunder is proud to announce that Rachel Johnson has committed to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (CIS) for the 2012-13 season.  The Huskies are based out of Saskatoon and play in the CIS’s Canada West Conference where they currently hold down first place.

Johnson is a third year left winger with the Thunder and has been a big part of the Thunder’s success during her time in the AMMFHL.  She is currently enjoying another solid season as one of the offensive leaders who play in all situations for the team.  The Thunder assistant captain was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player and a 2nd Team All-Star at last month’s Calgary Macs Tournament as well this past month she was named to the AMMFHL North All-Star Team.  Her on-ice achievements began in her first season with the Thunder where she led the team in scoring and in her second season she received the Unsung Hero Award.   

Johnson attends McNally High School where she maintains honor grades as well finds time to volunteer as a coach in the sport of sledge hockey.  She will be pursuing a science degree with a goal of earning a masters or PHD in that field.

Calgary Macs Tournament

Congratulations to the Edmonton Thunder as they reached the Macs championship game and lost a thrilling 3-2 overtime game to the Regina Rebels.  The team had a great week going undefeated during the round robin (4-0) and continuing with their solid play by out playing the Saskatoon Stars to a 3-1 win in the semi-final.  The team had a great week and did themselves proud.

The RE/MAX 2012 AMMFHL All-Star Weekend preparations are well under way as the host Edmonton Thunder committee is excited to present the weekend’s festivities.

January 7th (Saturday)
·         Welcome Luncheon
Players and coaching staff from both teams will be welcomed by the host committee to kick off the weekend.

  ·         Tim Horton’s Skills Competition
  Bragging rights will be on the line as Team South vs. Team North will compete in individual and team events to determine the top team!!!  Also fantastic awards and prizes will be presented to the fastest skater, hardest shot, most accurate shooter and top goalie.

 The high light of the evening will definitely be when Olympic Gold Medalist &    Canadian National Team member Shannon Szabados takes to the podium.

January 8th (Sunday)
  ·         RE/MAX All-Star Game
  The AMMFHL’s best will take to the ice to showcase their skills to all in attendance.  It promises to be an entertaining game with lots of action. 
 Tickets are only $5.00 at the door and minor hockey players wearing their team hockey jersey get free admission.
  **Start time will be 11:00am at the Edmonton Terwillegar Rec Centre- Arena A.

November Player of the Month

Congratulations to Kelsie Lang on being selected as the Thunder Player of the Month recipient.

During the month of November Kelsie was a solid contributor to the Thunder as the team was 4-1-1 and has continued to be in first place in the north.  Kelsie plays defense and was nothing short of outstanding during each game as she scored one goal and added two assists in the six games, but her main contribution on the ice was her stellar defensive play as she always plays against opponents’ top players and during November she was only on during one goal against.  One of her main strengths was her compete level as she never loses a battle and rarely takes a penalty as she did throughout the month.

Kelsie is an assistant captain on the Thunder as voted by her teammates.  Her leadership is by example on and off the ice as well all of her teammates are very comfortable and know they can approach her regarding anything. 

She is currently in grade 12 and attending the St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy where she maintains high academics as a member of the honor role.  She is a leader in the community as she has given back with being involved with the Special Olympics as well volunteering her time at St. Benedict’s Elementary School as a mentor to their young students.

Her goal is to attain a university scholarship to the NCAA for the 2012-13 season so she can further her education and hockey career.


October Player of the Month

Congratulations to 2nd year center Mikaeli Cavell on her selection as the Thunder player of the month for October.  Mikaeli had a great month of October as she was instrumental in the Thunder's success as the leaders of the north in the AMMFHL.  Her offensive play was outstanding as she is amongst the top in the entire league while playing all situations for the Thunder.  She battles and competes hard while she plays a power forward game that intimidates opponents.  Off the ice she maintains honour grades while attending Archbishop O'Leary High School and volunteered with the Special Olympics organization.

Thunder Volunteer for the Special Olympics

On October 30th the Thunder team spent the afternoon conducting a hockey skills clinic for the Edmonton Bulldogs who participate in the Special Olympics floor hockey division.  The girls spent their time passing along their hockey knowledge to the all male Bulldogs including a game between the two teams.

Fun was had by all as well the Thunder wish the Bulldogs Good Luck throughout their season!!!

Congratulations to Thunder player Jessica Sekulic on her selection to Team Alberta.  Jessica will be competing in the 2011 National Women's Under 18 Championship, November 2-6 in Saguenay, Quebec.
